Boat transport UK: road haulage costs, escorts and what to prepare

Road transport is priced on the awkwardness of the load rather than distance alone. Beam and height decide whether you are a routine job or an abnormal load.
When it becomes an abnormal load
Once the load exceeds standard width or height limits, the haulier must notify the authorities and may need a route survey and escort vehicles. This is the biggest single step-change in price, and it is driven by beam, not length.
Height is the sneaky one
Measure from the road to the top of the boat on the trailer, including any cradle. Bridges, not width, are what force long detours and expensive re-routes.
What the quote should include
Ask explicitly whether lifting at each end, cradle hire, mast unstepping, insurance in transit and any escort costs are included. Many quotes are haulage only.
Preparing the boat
Remove or lash loose gear, secure lockers and hatches, drain water systems, disconnect batteries where advised, unstep the mast and pad any overhanging fittings. Photograph the boat before it leaves.
Insurance
Confirm the haulier's goods-in-transit cover value against your boat's value, and check your own policy covers land transit. The gap between the two is where disputes happen.
