What an outboard service includes
A typical annual service on a four-stroke outboard. Two-strokes skip the engine oil change but everything else still applies — ask each quote to state exactly which of these are covered.

- How often should an outboard be serviced?
- Most manufacturers specify annually or every 100 hours, whichever comes first. Boats in salt water, hire use or heavy season use are normally serviced at the end of the season so they are not laid up with salt and old oil inside.
- What does an outboard service cost in the UK?
- It depends on horsepower, two-stroke versus four-stroke, and whether the engineer travels to the boat. Small portable outboards are at the lower end; large four-strokes with multiple filters and gearbox work at the upper end. - Can the engine be serviced without taking the boat out of the water?
- Yes, for most annual servicing. Engineers work afloat at the berth or on the trailer. Only leg removal, gearbox rebuilds and some impeller housing work usually need the engine off the transom or a workshop visit.
- Do I need a main dealer for a warranty engine?
- If your engine is inside its manufacturer warranty, servicing normally has to follow the manufacturer's schedule and be recorded. Say so when you post the job and engineers can confirm whether they can service it without affecting the warranty.
- Should I winterise as well as service?
- On a UK boat, yes. Winterisation adds fuel stabilisation or draining, fogging or corrosion protection, water draining and correct storage position. Many owners book the service and winterisation together at the end of the season to save a second visit.
