Boat winterisation: the UK checklist and what it costs

Winterisation is cheap insurance. A cracked heat exchanger or a split calorifier costs several times what the whole job would have cost in October.

Engine and cooling

Raw-water systems are drained and filled with non-toxic antifreeze to the correct concentration, oil and filters are changed while the oil is warm and carrying contaminants, and the impeller is inspected or replaced.

Fuel

Tanks are best left close to full to limit condensation, with a biocide or stabiliser added. Diesel bug is the single most common springtime callout on the platform.

Water systems

Fresh water tanks, calorifier, pumps, shower drains and heads all need draining or filling with potable antifreeze. Anything holding water in an unheated boat is a burst waiting to happen.

Batteries and electrics

Either remove batteries to a warm dry store on a maintenance charge, or leave them aboard with a working shore charger and a monitored setup. A flat lead-acid bank left over winter rarely recovers.

Cover, ventilation and the sequence

Cover the boat but do not seal it — trapped moisture causes more damage than cold. Book engine work before the yard's lift-out rush in late October; slots and prices both get worse in November.
