Marine engine winterization: a boat owner's guide

Most winter engine damage is not caused by the cold itself — it is caused by water and acid left sitting inside a warm engine that then cools down for five months. Winterization is cheap; a cracked heat exchanger or a bug-blocked fuel system in April is not.

1. Change the oil and filter while the engine is warm

Used engine oil carries combustion acids and water. Left in the sump over winter those acids pit bearings and camshaft lobes — damage you only discover in spring when the engine sounds rough. Run the engine until warm, pump the sump dry, fit a new filter and refill with the manufacturer's grade.

2. Flush the raw-water circuit and add antifreeze

Raw water left in the heat exchanger, exhaust elbow and water-lift muffler will freeze, split castings and rot the impeller. Flush the circuit with fresh water, then draw a 50/50 propylene-glycol mix through the seacock until it runs coloured out of the exhaust. Remove and bag the impeller so its vanes don't take a set.

3. Stabilise the fuel and drain the water trap

Diesel absorbs water and grows bug over a damp winter, which blocks filters at the worst possible moment. Fill the tank to cut condensation space, add a biocide-and-stabiliser dose, drain the primary filter bowl and note the hours so the spring service starts from a known point.

4. Protect the cooling system, belts and anodes

Check the coolant's freeze point rather than assuming it — old inhibitor lets internal corrosion run all winter. Slacken alternator belts, inspect hoses for softening, and renew engine and heat-exchanger anodes so galvanic wastage doesn't continue while the boat sits.

5. Fog the bores and seal the openings

A light oil fog through the intake coats bores and valve seats against surface rust. Then seal the air intake and exhaust outlet against damp air and rodents, and leave a note on the helm so nobody cranks a sealed engine.

When to call a marine engineer

Owners can usually manage fuel treatment and sealing. Bring in a qualified engineer where a mistake is expensive or hard to see: heat-exchanger and exhaust-elbow work, coolant and anode renewal, saildrive and gearbox oil changes, and anything on a common-rail engine under warranty. An engineer also leaves you a written record of hours, parts and readings — which is exactly what a buyer or insurer asks for later.
